Bettei Otozure has been selected as one of the elite Michelin Key hotels as defined by the Michelin Guide.
Announced on July 4, 2024, this is the first time for a Japanese hotel to be awarded the One Michelin Key hotel status. Bettei Otozure has been selected as one of the elite Michelin Key hotels as defined by the Michelin Guide.The beautiful Bettei Otozure is a ryokan – a traditional Japanese inn – nestled in the mountains near the city of Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains and the Otozure River, and the elegant surroundings, private walkways, and views are lovely and serene.
Michelin Key hotels are selected from among properties that meet the following five evaluation criteria:
- The hotel itself is a travel destination and provides a unique experience
- It exhibits excellent architecture and interior design
- The quality of service, comfort, and maintenance are consistent
- It offers an experience that is worth the price
- The facility reflects a unique personality and authenticity

The Michelin Key distinction is awarded to accommodations that provide a singularly outstanding experience, and Bettei Otozure meets all the criteria. We were selected as one of the first Japanese One Michelin Key hotels among 108 properties receiving the award.
In particular, it was highly evaluated that Bettei Otozure is an inn that expresses the concept of “toji modern,” that is, a modern take on the traditional Japanese practice of healing the body with onsen, or hot spring baths – which has been confirmed as medically effective.
